A traditional kopi tiam, rich in memories and heritage, is at risk of becoming irrelevant when faced with rapid changes in our society. How should the elderly owner of the kopi tiam and his grandson deal with these external changes and pressures, and negotiate their differing views?

Adapted from Cultural Medallion recipient Kuo Pao Kun's 1986 play, Kopitiam, this experiential and interactive theatre performance will take the audience to the world of traditional coffee shops, allowing them an inlet to this important aspect of Singaporean culture.

Students will be tasked to think critically and analyse the issue of development in Singapore through facilitated discussion and activities, encouraging them to imagine / re-imagine their role in shaping Singapore's future.

Learning Objectives

This performance will help students to:
  • gain a deeper understanding of the kopitiam history and culture in Singapore
  • critically analyse the issue of development in Singapore
  • imagine / re-imagine their role in shaping Singapore's future

Kopitiam also marks the graduation of the 2nd cohort of ARTivate – The Youth Wing of Drama Box. After two years of training and capacity building, the youths, at the helm of director Han Xuemei, resident artist of Drama Box, take up most of the roles in the production of Kopitiam, from (most of the) cast ensemble, assistant production and stage manager, assistant director, to set, lighting and costume designers.

Kopitiam is presented as part of Esplanade's Feed Your Imagination (F.Y.I). Additional show for public is available on 26 May 2016, 8pm.
